Dr. Lorenz Trein

Lorenz Trein is an Assistant Professor at the Chair of Religious Studies at LMU Munich. He studied religion, ethnology as well as modern and contemporary history in Munich, and the history of the early modern period and sociology at the University of Zurich. He received his PhD from the University of Basel in 2014 with a thesis on the discursive formation of the collective singular Islam in contexts of the European history of religion and science in the 19th and 20th centuries. His habilitation project addresses historical periods in religious and secularization discourse as well as a historical theory of secularization which scrutinizes the current presence of past times in religious history.
During his time as a Junior Researcher in Residence at CAS, Lorenz Trein will concern himself with aspects of historical semantics of the beginnings and consolidation of early Christianity within the historiography thereof, using selected sources from the 19th century as well as earlier sources. These historiographical origin discourses will be reflected upon within the wider context of the habilitation in terms of the theory, debated in various disciplinary contexts, of a dependence of secular-modern time concepts on religious explanations of origins and typological history discourses.
