Sources and Modes of Order Contestation: The EU and Beyond

The goal of this CAS Research Focus is to develop a more sophisticated analytical understanding of “crisis” through interdisciplinary research, investigating the objects, sources, processes and outcomes of order challenges to the EU and its predecessors.

Over the past decade, the European Union has been in a constant state of crisis – at least according to most observers. Moving beyond the crisis perspective, this project pays special attention to those dimensions of European integration that are often overlooked. It examines forms of continuity, stability, and renewal and draws on examples from history and our own times. Such dynamics are often hidden and beyond the focus of public debates. While the EU has been put under a lot of pressure, order contestation has often resulted in reformatting, reshaping, and reinforcing existing arrangements, not in institutional demise or discontinuation.
