Jay L. Westbrook holds the Benno C. Schmidt Chair for Economic Law at the University of Texas in Austin.

He is one of the leading figures in the field of insolvency law and has been a pioneer in both empirical analyses and international comparative studies. Alongside his activities as visiting professor at Harvard Law School and the University of London, he has advised the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in issues of economic law. His most well-known works include The Fragile Middle Class (Yale, 2000) and The Law of Debtors and Creditors (Aspen, 2001).

Jay L. Westbrook will be a visiting fellow at the CAS in May 2011 as part of the CAS research focus "Law as a Product" upon invitation from Prof. Dr. Horst Eidenmüller and will give a lecture on 24 May 2011 entitled "Regulatory Competition in Bankruptcy Law".
