Matthew D. Stephen is a Research Fellow in the Department of Global Governance at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB).

He received his Ph.D. in political science from Freie Universität Berlin in 2013. In 2018/2019, he holds the Professorial Chair in International Relations and Regional Governance at the Helmut Schmidt Universität in Hamburg. His research mainly focuses on the interaction between international power shifts, legitimacy, and international institutions. He is currently working on a project proposal to examine current and historical nonliberal international orders.

Stephen's best-known publication is "Rising Powers, Global Capitalism and Liberal Global Governance", published in the "European Journal of International Relations" in 2014. He has also published in "Global Governance", "Review of International Studies", and "Cambridge Review of International Affairs".

Matthew D. Stephen is a Visiting Fellow at CAS in March and July 2019 and is part of the CAS Research Group "Power Shifts and Institutional Change in International Institutions" of Prof. Dr. Bernhard Zangl. He will also participate in the workshop "International Institutions in an Age of Global Power Shifts: Negotiating Change" on 27 and 28 June 2019.
