Geology

Hugo Delgado is Director of the Institute of Geophysics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

He studied Geological Engineering first at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and then at Tohoku University in Japan, where he completed his doctorate in Geology in 1992. Since 1983, Hugo Delgado has taught Geodynamics as a professor at UNAM’s Faculty of Engineering. Since 1991 he has worked in the Department of Seismology and Volcanology at the Institute of Geophysics, of which he was appointed Director in 2017.

As one of Mexico's leading geophysicists, Hugo Delgado is currently entrusted with the observation of the active volcano Popocatépetl in the Mexico City region. This includes the monitoring of the emitted gases and of its glaciers. His research interests concentrate particularly on volcanic tectonics, volcanic stratigraphy and volcanic gases.

Hugo Delgado is a Visiting Fellow from June to August 2019 in the context of the CAS Research Group "Magma to Tephra: Ash in the Earth System" led by Prof. Dr. Donald B. Dingwell.

On 30 July 2019 he will give a lecture on "Volcán Popocatépetl: basic science vs. decision making" at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
