Dr. María Alejandra Arciniega Ceballos

Alejandra Arciniega Ceballos Ceballos is Professor at the Institute of Geophysics and at the School of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

She studied Geophysics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). At UNAM, she also completed her doctoral thesis on the activity of the volcano Popocatépetl under the supervision of Bernard Chouet, before becoming a postdoc in the Volcano Hazards Team of the US Geological Survey in California, USA. Since 2017, she has been director of the Volcanology Department at the Institute of Geophysics at UNAM. She is a member of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and has been a visiting fellow in the US, Germany and Italy.

Alejandra Arciniega Ceballos' research expertise is in the field of volcano seismology, particularly in the study of volcanic conduit dynamics. Her multi-scale perspective on the processes and effects found during the ascension of magmatic fluids to the Earth’s surface links seismological observations from the field with laboratory experiments and numerical modeling.

Alejandra Arciniega Ceballos is a Visiting Fellow from April to July 2019 in the context of the CAS Research Group "Magma to Tephra: Ash in the Earth System" led by Prof. Dr. Donald B. Dingwell. She will participate in the conference "Volcanic Ash in the Earth System: Generation, Dispersal, Consequences" on 9 and 10 May 2019.
