Esther Peeren is Professor of Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam and Academic Director of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis.

Her work has been instrumental in shaping the spectral turn within cultural studies (The Spectralities Reader, Bloomsbury, 2013). She has placed her work on spectrality in the theoretical context of invisibility metaphors and concepts, as is evident particularly in her monograph The Spectral Metaphor: Living Ghosts and the Agency of Invisibility (Palgrave Macmillan 2014) and her edited collection Peripheral Visions in a Globalizing World (Brill 2016). An interest in questions of spectrality and invisibility also informs her current work, funded by the European Research Council, on "Imagining the Rural in a Globalizing World".

Esther Peeren is a Visiting Fellow in March 2022 upon invitation from Dr. Gero Guttzeit (Researcher in Residence 2021/22).
