William Nienhauser is Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

As a specialist for traditional Chinese literature history, he was the editor, among other publications, of the standard work "Indiana Companion to Traditional Chinese Literature" and has worked on stories and poetry of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). He is currently leading a project with the goal of translating the first Chinese dynasty history – the writings of the scribe Sima Qian (145?-87? BC).

Following his stay in the summer semester 2012, in June 2013 and in June 2014 William Nienhauser will be in Munich once again in December 2017 to January 2018 upon invitation fromProf. Dr. Hans van Ess (CAS Senior Researcher in Residence 2011/12).
