Prof. Thomas Hurka, Ph.D.

Thomas Hurka is Chancellor Henry N.R. Jackman Distinguished Professor of Philosophical Studies at the University of Toronto. He earned his D.Phil. at Oxford University and previously taught at the University of Calgary. He held visiting positions at Oxford University, Princeton University, and the Australian National University.

Thomas Hurka works on moral and political philosophy, with special interest in the theory of the good. He is the author of Perfectionism (Oxford / New York, 1993), Virtue, Vice, and Value (Oxford / New York, 2001), The Best Things in Life (Oxford / New York, 2011), and British Ethical Theorists from Sidgwick to Ewing (Oxford, 2014), as well as articles on topics such as population ethics, nationalism, proportionality in war, and the value of friendship.
