Prof. Alan Code, PhD

Alan Code is Professor of Philosophy at Stanford University, California, USA. He has previously held teaching positions at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and at UCLA in Berkeley, California.

Alan Code is one of the world's leading researchers on Aristotle and is known particularly as the most important expert on Aristotelian metaphysics and logic. Alan Code has worked with some of the most renowned philosophers of the 20th century (Paul Feyerabend, Paul Grice, Donald Davidson, John Searle, Kit Fine), and is thus in a unique position to be able to relate problems of philosophy history and ancient philosophy to discussions of contemporary philosophy in particular.

Alan Code will be in residence at the CAS as a visiting fellow from September until December 2011 as part of the research focus "The Physics of Free Will" upon invitation from Professor Christof Rapp and Professor Oliver Primavesi. As an outstanding expert on the preservation of texts on Aristotelian metaphysics, he will be an important partner for his hosts during the editing and commenting of this work. Furthermore, Code has heavily influenced one of the most important interpretation alternatives for the ancient body-soul debate, meaning that his visit promises important impulses for the research focus "The Physics of Free Will". Alan Code is again a Visiting Fellow in May 2018 in the context of the CAS Research Group "Editing Metaphysics" upon invitation from Prof. Dr. Oliver Primavesi.
