Celia Applegate is Professor of History at the University of Rochester, USA.

Her specialist research areas are the modern culture, society and politics of Germany, with particular emphasis on the history of National Socialism and national identity. One of her key works on the topic is "A Notion of Provincials: The German Idea of Heimat". She is currently working on a large study on musical culture in Germany from the 18th century up to the present. She has been president of the German Studies Association (GSA) since 2009.

In May 2011, Celia Applegate will be in residence as a visiting fellow at the CAS following an invitation from Professor Christof Mauch of the America Institute of the LMU, and will also cooperate there with Professor Martin Geyer, Professor Martin Baumeister and Professor Margit Szöllösi-Janze from the Department of History. In addition, she will take part in the international workshop organized by Michael Kimmage entitled "The Enlightenment between Europe and the United States. Twentieth-Century Tensions".
