From Ingroup Bias to Collective Action

Workshop unter Leitung von Dr. Antonia Misch (CAS Junior Researcher in Residence/LMU).

12.12.2019 – 13.12.2019

From early on, humans are attuned to social group life, for the better or the worse: young children already identify readily with social groups and prefer members of their ingroup in a number of cases, thereby discriminating against outgroup members. Ingroup bias can thus be the cradle for problems from which our global societies suffer from on a larger scale, such as outgroup hate, conflicts and wars. In order to overcome these problems, it is important to better understand the psychological mechanisms underlying humans' group-mindedness. On the other hand, ingroup bias also gives rise to a number of phenomena that can help to improve our societies, for example by enabling successful cooperation or powerful collective action.

Teilnehmer sind u.a.: Philipp Jugert (Duisburg-Essen), Patricia Kanngießer (FU Berlin/Leipzig), Jellie Sierksma (Amsterdam), Olivia Spiegler (Oxford), Jacquelien van Stekelenburg (Amsterdam), Michal Reifen Tagar (IDC Herzliya), Harvey Whitehouse (Oxford).
