Understanding the Demand for Democracy

Internationale Tagung unter Leitung von Prof. Davide Cantoni (LMU), Ph.D., David Y. Yang (Stanford), Prof. Noam Yuchtman, Ph.D. (UC Berkely).

06.07.2018 – 07.07.2018

What is the political economy of mass protests? What drives people in autocracies to take to the streets and demand democratic participation? How does mobilization for democracy differ from political mobilization campaigns more broadly, both in democracies (get-out-the-vote campaigns) and in dictatorships (staged mass demonstrations)? In this workshop, we want to bring together social science scholars working on these questions. In the light of the recent literature on the impact of institutions, it is important to shed light on the dynamics that can lead to institutional change. A particular, albeit not exclusive, focus of the conference will be on China and the local dynamics of protests and media control.

Teilnehmer sind u.a.: Leonardo Bursztyn (Chicago), Michael Callen (UC San Diego), Vicky Fouka (Stanford), Monica Martinez-Bravo (CEMFI, Madrid), Jennifer Pan (Stanford).
