Tropical Dry Forests: The Least Understood Tropical Ecosystem, a Vision of Change in the Americas

Referent: Prof. Arturo Sánchez-Azofeifa, Ph.D. | Moderation: Prof. Dr. Ralf Ludwig (LMU)

24.04.2018 at 18:00

Neotropical dry forests are the least understood of all tropical ecosystems. These forests currently cover an area close to 600,000 km2 across the Americas. Despite being important sources of ecosystem services (water, climate regulation, biodiversity), they are under intense socio-economic pressures resulting on extremely high deforestation rates. Arturo Sánchez-Azofeifa introduces the concept of tropical dry forests, explores its biodiversity and landscapes and discusses current degradation forests. He also examines the role that these forests play as "the canaries in the mine" regarding their responses to climate change.

Arturo Sánchez-Azofeifa ist Direktor des Center for Earth Observation Sciences und Professor am Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences an der University of Alberta und derzeit Visiting Fellow am CAS.
