Chemokine System, the Cell Esperanto: Crucial Roles of Atypical Chemokine Receptors in Chemokine Grammar

Chemokines compose a universal inter-cellular communication system. Chemokine-encoded messages are deciphered by specific receptors, which transmit intracellular signals leading to multiple cellular responses, most prominently cell chemotaxis. Interestingly, atypical chemokine receptors (ACKRs) fail to induce classical signaling and downstream cellular responses characteristic of typical receptors. Despite this, they play important roles in chemokine messaging through either chemokine scavenging or directional transcellular transport. Antal Rot will talk about how ACKRs edit chemokine-encoded messages and change the meaning of chemokines thus converting inarticulate cell gibberish into eloquent, spatially restricted signals.

Antal Rot ist Professor für Immunologie an der University of Birmingham. Im Sommersemester 2014 hält er sich als Visiting Fellow am CAS auf.
