From Rational Capitalism and Democracy to Political Capitalism and Post-Democracy

Referent: Prof. Bob Jessop, Ph.D. | Moderation: Nikolaus Piper (SZ)

08.11.2016 at 18:15

Political theorists and political economists from diverse left-wing, centrist and right-wing perspectives have posited a relation of at least formal, if not substantive, adequacy between capitalism and democracy. Bob Jessop interrogates this claim both historically and comparatively, drawing on Max Weber's typology of forms of orientation to profit (Erwerbsorientierung) as well as different strands of Marxist theory; he suggests that the alleged relation between capitalism and democracy holds for cases of consolidated rational capitalism and is undermined where one or more of Weber's forms of political capitalism are dominant.

Bob Jessop ist Professor für Soziologie an der Lancaster University und Visiting Fellow am CAS.
