Dr. Tobias Grill
Summer Semester 2015
Tobias Grill has been Postdoc at the Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies at LMU Munich since 2013. He studied Slavic Studies, East European, Contemporary, and Jewish History in Munich and in 2009 received a Ph.D. from LMU Munich with a thesis on cultural transfers between German and East European Jewries. From 2008 to 2012, he was assistant professor at the Chair for Modern History with a Special Emphasis on International Relations at the University of the Armed Forces Munich. His research focus is on Jewish history in Eastern Europe.
As Junior Researcher in Residence, Tobias Grill will be working on his Habilitation ('second book'). In the center of this project is the lawyer, politician, journalist, and cultural activist Isaac Nachman Steinberg (1888–1957) who was one of the most renowned Jewish personalities in his time. The main goal is to show on the basis of a critical and "deliberated" biography on Steinberg the transnational and transcultural entanglements of Jewish and non-Jewish history during the first half of the 20th century, thus contributing especially to the field of Global History. In this context, in June 2015 he will hold the international conference "Jews and Germans in Eastern Europe – Shared and Comparative Histories".
